This fixture was played under Cheshire RFU’s rules and was therefore 4-aside which meant the gang were split into 2 groups to allow 4 games each of 14 minutes duration.
Match one started off in a ding-dong fashion and tries were traded over much of the first half, which finished 6-5 in Port’s favour. In the second half, the Oilers really made their mark and the physical differences took their toll on the home side as the Port ran in a further 9 tries to run out 15-5 winners. Try scorers were Oliver (6), Matthew (5), Max (3) and Joe (1).
Match two was a much tighter affair and Port prevailed by 12 tries to 10. Defensive frailties and poor organisation threatened to undo the excellent attacking work and the Oilers’ youngest team can consider themselves fortunate that their willingness to engage general chit chat whilst Congleton were attacking resulted in no more than a parental rollicking from the sidelines. The inability to hold a solid defensive line (and refrain from chatter!) is an area that will need to be addressed over the coming weeks. Try scorers were Paddy (4), Max (4), Tomos (2) and Oliver (2).
