Today saw the U12 and U11 teams come together to travel to the new community sports centre in Helsby to play as a combined team. It’s great to see the red, yellow and black of the Oiler’s in full flow on the pitch in such great number. It was great to see Charlie McG back competing too after his injury at Sandbach 3 weeks ago!

The first quarter saw the Oiler’s start with a predominantly U12 team, settling into their rhythm quickly with a couple of tries from Max Ogley down the wing. After some tactical rotation from the coaches, the Oiler’s ended the quarter 4-1 up after Max M and Liam opened their try tallies.

The second period saw a comeback from Helsby as they scored the first two tries to bring the scoreline within 1. Despite the opposition being slightly older and somewhat bigger, the relentless tackling from Charlie C and Noah C’s game continued as it has been in recent weeks. The boys ended the half with a 2 try advantage at 5-3.

The third – and final – quarter (yes, you’ve read that correctly!) cemented the Oiler’s dominance. Both Max O and Max M completed their hat tricks before Helsby put together a couple of passages of play to assault the Oiler’s try line giving them a couple of much needed and cheered tries. Mikey sealed the final score of 8-5 with a late try and the Oiler’s brought home the victory.

All boys tried their hardest today with both teams learning to adjust their game to accommodate the different style of play from each age group. Special mentions went to Charlie McG and Charlie C for MOTM performances and Matthew and Max M were awarded for their TREDS performance.

It’s the last weekend of the regular season next week, so let’s hope for more great games of rugby.
